Patient Identifier Cross-referencing (PIX)

The PIX Profile supports the cross-referencing of patient identifiers from multiple Patient Identifier Domains. These cross-referenced patient identifiers can then be used by “identity consumer” systems to correlate information about a single patient from sources that “know” the patient by different identifiers. This allows a clinician to have more complete view of the patient information.

PIX (Patient Identifier Cross-Referencing) is about a system (PIX Manager) that links patient records from multiple sources together. The profile describes how to feed the PIX Manager with new/updated/merged patient data (ITI-8), how to query for associated patient identifiers (ITI-9) and how to let PIX Manger notify other systems, when an association changes (ITI-10). PIX queries deal with patient identifiers only (therefore no big responses => no continuation required).
